TAMPA, Fla. -- Tyler Johnson stole the spotlight in a matchup of two top rookies. Johnson scored three goals to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. With the Lightning leading 3-2, Johnson doubled the advantage with 5:22 remaining and then completed his first career hat trick less than 2 1/2 minutes later. The centre has 16 goals this season. Colorados Nathan MacKinnon, who entered leading all rookies with 17 goals, had an assist. "Fairly decent timing on Tylers part to net three in this game," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "He was on it tonight." Mark Barberio and Valtteri Filppula also scored for the Lightning. Martin St. Louis extended his point streak to 10 games with an assist on Johnsons second goal. "Its one of those things that you have to get lucky to get," Johnson said. Tampa Bay defenceman Victor Hedman had three assists for the second consecutive game. John Mitchell and Tyson Barrie scored in the second period for Colorado. Sami Aittokallio made his first start this season and second of his career filling in for injured Colorado backup Jean-Sebastien Giguere (back). Playing three times in four days, Avalanche coach Patrick Roy had planned to give Semyon Varlamov, who made 34 saves in Fridays 3-2 win at Florida, the night off. Varlamov replaced Aittokallio, who gave up three goals on 18 shots, to start the third period. "Its not easy for him, and I certainly understand that," Roy said. "But at the same time, I thought we had some momentum and it was the call to make at that moment. If I had a crystal ball, yes, I would have kept him there." Aittokallio, recalled from Lake Erie of the AHL Friday, made his first career appearance in a start last April 11 at Los Angeles, a game in which he left in the third period due to leg cramps. Johnson opened the scoring at 7:15 of the second period, Barberio made it 2-0 about 1 1/2 minutes later when his shot from the top of the right circle deflected off a Colorado defender and past Aittokallio. Filppula completed Tampa Bays three-goal period with just under 2 minutes to go. "He played a good game," Roy said of Johnson. "Thats all Im going to say." Mitchell got the Avalanche on the scoreboard when his redirection eluded Ben Bishop with 1:27 left in the second and Barrie scored 30 seconds later to pull Colorado within one. "We gave ourselves a real opportunity," Mitchell said. "We ran out of time in the second period. If we had a little bit more time on the clock, we had all the momentum going our way. "Look, for Toronto FC Id love him to stay obviously, because hes a quality player," said Nelsen, who captained New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup. "But for Jermain, if I was the England manager, I probably would pick him. Because you know what youre going to get with him -- you absolutely know what youre going to get with him." Defoe, who played at the 2010 World Cup, offers England experience and a scoring touch off the bench. He has potted goals everywhere he has played -- including 19 in 55 appearances for his country. The 31-year-old striker says he is in the dark, waiting for the phone to ring. "Its down to the manager," said Defoe, referring to England boss Roy Hodgson. "He picks the squad. "Im sure he knows what every player can do. And even before he was the England manager, he probably knew all the players anyway. So Im sure that the manager knows his squad. Given that, some argue that it would make more sense to take a younger player over Defoe. The argument there is that it would be an investment in the future. Nelsen sees the other side to that coin, suggesting his man has the seasoning and mental toughness to survive the England spotlight. "Probably the Brazil and the England national team are the hardest teams in world sport to play for, in terms of expectation and pressure," he said. "You know Jermain can handle that. On the worlds biggest stage, you want to kind off knock out the variables. And I think Jermain does that." "With my TFC hat on, I hope he doesnt (go).
